What is a Chin Implant?
Facial implants such as chin implants are used to strengthen facial structure or help reconstruct facial features that may have been lost. Chin implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can give the appearance of a sharper bone structure. Facial implants are a more permanent solution to facial enhancement or rejuvenation than using dermal fillers to add structure or shape.
Who is a Candidate for Chin Implants?
A candidate for chin implants is any patient that is in good general health, that also desires to augment the structure of their jawline and lower facial profile.
A patient may consider chin implants if:
- They have a weak or softer chin structure and would like to have a sharper contour to face.
- Your lack of structure to your jawline doesn’t frame your face or distinguish the transition from your chin to your neck.
- An injury or congenital deformity has caused your face to lack symmetry or proportion.
Overall, if you are in good physical health and have realistic expectations for the procedure, you are most likely a good candidate for chin implants.
The Procedure
After your initial consultation with Dr. Fichadia, she will select an appropriate chin implant and will begin marking the areas she will make incisions in order to insert the implant. These incisions are typically made on the underside of chin or inside of the mouth, making any scars rather inconspicuous. Once the incision is made, a pocket will be created in the facial tissue to place the implant into. Once the implant is placed, the incision site will be closed either using sutures or surgical glue.
Results & Recovery
After the procedure, you will most likely experience bruising and swelling for a few days with some discomfort. During this period of time, you can use a cold compress to reduce swelling and discomfort. Also, due to the proximity of the chin implant, Dr. Fichadia may provide you with some recovery restrictions such as a specific diet that will not aggravate your incisions. Before you leave to go home after your procedure, Dr. Fichadia will provide you with specific instructions for aftercare for a proper recovery.
